Dr. Patricia Freeman

Patricia R. Freeman is an associate professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science in the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. Her research interests are focused on substance use policy. Currently, her work is centered on impact of policies designed to increase access to the opioid overdose reversal agent naloxone. Other recent activities include evaluating prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) and their impact and effectiveness at preventing prescription drug abuse and diversion. Dr. Freeman has expertise in the areas of prescription drug abuse, prescription drug monitoring programs, substance use disorder policy, pharmacy practice-based research. In addition to her roles in substance use disorder policy evaluation, Dr. Freeman has served in various leadership roles in practice, including President and Chair of the Kentucky Pharmacists Association and Chair of the Advancing Pharmacy Practice in Kentucky Coalition (APPKC) Steering Committee
HEALing Communities Study role: Freeman led the prevention team and pharmacy-based interventions to reduce the supply of excess opioids through increased disposal of unused medications, identified and worked to reduce risky prescribing and dispensing behaviors among prescribers and pharmacists, and promoted increased use of the opioid overdose reversal agent naloxone. She supported the naloxone education and distribution efforts of the implementation and community engagement teams.
